A factice is a display bottle which is an exact replica of the original perfume bottle. The factice may be of any size, as seen with Crown’s Bijou bottles. Usually though, a factice refers to a large, very large display bottle.
Originally made of glass and filled with real perfume, today most factices are made of high quality plastic or acrylic. They are filled with a non-expensive colored liquid.
In 1893, The Crown Perfumery Company offered “large show bottles” free to merchants with orders over $50.00. These bottles may have been the 21.5” green glass bottle or the 9.25” clear bottle.
The Crown Perfumery Company also used large factices of Crown Lavender Salts and Crab Apple Blossoms at exhibitions. Then, as now, they were impressive advertising pieces.
